The Provincial Rabbit is an art cafe, vintage shop and florist on George Street in Moonta, on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula. If you've walked down the main street, you've probably noticed it. If you haven't been inside yet, this one's for you.

It's hard to put in one box. Ruth, who works there, describes it as an art cafe, but it's also a French-inspired store full of vintage and antique finds, homewares, gifts, garden pieces and fresh flowers. As Ruth put it, "We really want it to be an experience."

Watch our Moonta Monday visit to The Provincial Rabbit:

A 150-year-old building with a garden out the back

The building has over 150 years of history, and you can feel it. Ruth's favourite spot is the garden out the back. It's genuinely peaceful, even though you're sitting just off Moonta's main street.

Keep an eye out for the antique Egyptian doors too, complete with grills and openings designed to let the cool air through. Not something you expect to find in Moonta.

What to order at The Provincial Rabbit

Ruth is firmly in the coffee camp. Smooth, strong, double shots, and in her words, the best coffee in Moonta. If you're more of a tea person, there are over 20 different teas to choose from.

There's also homemade cake, soup and rum and raisin ice cream.

Gluten-free cakes in Moonta

If you're looking for gluten-free options in Moonta, this is a good one to know about. The Provincial Rabbit has a good range of gluten-free cakes and treats, which makes it an easy pick if you're out with someone who can't have gluten.

Vintage, homewares, art and flowers

The shop side is where you can lose a bit of time. Vintage and antique pieces, art, homewares, garden items and fresh flowers, and a lot of surprises in between. Ruth's favourite part is the vintage, because you never know what special, one-off thing you'll find.

Why people keep coming back

The thing Ruth loves most is the customers. Some people come in looking for a meaningful gift or keepsake after a hard time, and others just pop in to have a look around because it makes them feel good. "That's really the best part of my day," she said.

It's that kind of place. You don't have to be looking for anything in particular.
