Gool Peran Lowen! Celebrating St Piran's Day in Little Cornwall πŸ₯Ÿγ€“〓

Today is St Piran's Day (5th March), the national day of Cornwall, and here in Moonta, we have every reason to celebrate it like it's our own.

Because in many ways, it is.

Moonta isn't just a town on the Yorke Peninsula. It's Australia's Little Cornwall. In the 1860s, Cornish miners and their families crossed the world to work the copper mines of the Yorke Peninsula, bringing with them their language, their faith, their food, and their fierce sense of identity. At its peak, Moonta was South Australia's second largest town after Adelaide, a community built almost entirely on Cornish hands, Cornish know-how, and Cornish heart. The streets still carry Cornish names. The old engine houses still stand. And the pasties? Well. You already know.

So today, on the feast day of St Piran, patron saint of tin miners, legendary floater of millstones, and all-round beloved figure of Cornwall. We're raising a pasty to our heritage and shining a little spotlight on the Moonta-inspired pieces we carry right here in The Moonta Collective.

This year feels different

This year, St Piran's Day feels a little bittersweet for Moonta. With the museum, lolly shop and tourist train temporarily closed until Easter, we're missing those familiar heartbeats of our town. These aren't just tourist attractions, they're the beating heart of Moonta's heritage, the places where that Cornish story gets told and passed on. Today, more than ever, feels like a moment to honour that heritage and hold it close. And while we can't fix what's uncertain, we can celebrate what makes Moonta extraordinary...its history, its community and the Cornish spirit that has always run through its veins.
